The Cobbs Cemetery

The Cobb Cemetery is located just east of the fourth Green (or 5th Tee) of the Kanawha Country Club, on Kanawha Turnpike in the City of South Charleston (Kanawha County), West Virginia. Fleming Cobbs Grave Stone

The Cobbs and Cobb tombstones are in one area at the northeast corner of the cemetery.   This is important since it is the burial place of Fleming Cobbs, a very early settler in the Kanawha River Valley.

Sarah Morris Cobbs

The gravestone for Sarah Morris Cobbs, Fleming’s wife, was inscribed on limestone and is now difficult to read. The last and smallest inscription is a stanza from a hymn written by James Montgomery and John Fawcett entitled “Spirit, leave thine house of clay!”  The words are:  “Grave the guardian of our dust; Grave the treasury of the skies;
Every atom of thy trust; Rests in hope again to rise.”
