The Children Of William Franklin Draper

7. Susan Leticia

Born 24 Aug 1864 in Virginia, or what was actually West Virginia by then, Susan married Andrew Jesse Sanderson on 25 Dec 1879 in her father’s home in Washington County, Arkansas.  Sanderson, probably a brother or cousin of Thomas’ wife, Nancy, was born on 26 Oct 1859 in Tennessee. Andrew’s father is known to be William Sanderson.  Andrew and Susan raised six sons and two daughters. They moved from Arkansas to Californialifornia around 1900, because their eighth child was born in Arkansas in 1897, and their next and last child was born in California in 1901.  Andrew died on 17 Mar 1935 in California, and Susan died in Los Angeles, California, on 29 Jan 1950.

Chester is the only son of Susan and Andrew known to have registered for the draft.  On 5 Jun 1918, Chester, 21, is a married oil field worker in Sherman, Los Angeles County, California.  He was medium height and slender, with gray eyes and light brown hair.

8. Caroline Lee (E.)

Born around 1868 in Virginia, according to census records, but nothing more has been identified about her family. In 1880, she is living with her parents in Washington County, Arkansas, but her possible marriage or future movements have not been identified. She in not identified separately in future census records.

9. Robert E. Lee

Born on 21 Oct 1871 in Cooke County, Texas, Robert married Emma A. around 1895 in Arkansas. Emma was born Dec 1872 in Tennessee.  Her father was from Tennessee, and her mother may have been Native American. Robert, who is listed as a well digger in 1900 and a farmer in 1920, moved to Orange County, California, between 1898 and 1900. Robert’s mother Mary was part of his family in 1900. He is not identified in the 1910 census, but at that time, Mary was living with Samuel, who had also moved to California.

To whom and when Robert was married is still a question, but at some point before 1930, Robert married Esta Genevieve Greggory, born 9 Nov 1895 in Illinois. Her mother and father were both from Illinois, and her mother’s maiden name was Winterer.

In 1930 Robert, Esta and four daughters were living in Santa Cruz County, California, in the city of Santa Cruz. Robert’s children by his earlier marriage had grown or were living elsewhere. Robert died in Stanislaus, California, on 31 Oct 1952, and Esta died in San Mateo, California, on 31 Oct 1981.

Robert E. Lee and Emma A. Draper

1. James Frank (b. 9 Jul 1895, Arkansas; d. 18 Jul 1973, California)
2. Bessie (b. 1898, Oklahoma)
3. Flossy E. (b. 22 Aug 1908, Orange County, California)

According to California birth records, the maiden name of Flossie E. Draper’s mother was Greggory. It’s possible Emma’s maiden name was also Greggory, and a relative of Esta’s.  According to the 1920 census, Flossie was the only child born to Emma in California.

Robert E. Lee and Esta Genevieve Greggory Draper

1. Merion L. (b. 1924, California)
2. Myrna G. (b. 1926, California)
3. Maxine M. (b. 1928, California)
4. Mildred L. (b. 1929, California)

Birth records do not record any of these children being born to Esta Greggory Draper, unless Greggory was a married name from an earlier husband, and Lewis was her maiden name. A Myrna Genevieve Draper was born 28 Oct 1925 in Santa Clara County, California, a Maxine Margarite Draper was born 1 Jun 1927 in Glenn County, California, and a Mildred Draper was born 7 Jul 1929 in Glenn County, California, all three to a woman whose maiden name was Lewis.

A girl named Marion L. Draper was born 10 Apr 1920 in San Francisco County, California, to a woman with the maiden name of Weston. By the time Marion is born to a woman first named Weston Robert is almost 50, and almost ten years older when Mildred is born is born to a woman first named Lewis. The last four children could have been adopted, or possibly the children of an earlier child such as son, James Frank. He cannot be identified in the 1920 or 1930 census records. It is not known if or who he married.
