Solomon Draper, Jr. (c 1756)

Solomon Jr. (Solomon, Thomas) was born in 1756 in Amelia County, Virginia. 1  He died on 27 October 1827 in Person County, North Carolina.  Solomon married Joyce Taylor on 4 July 1790 in Caswell County, North Carolina. 2  Joyce was born in 1773 in Virginia to Reuben Taylor of Caswell.  While Joyce was 17 or 18 at the time of her marriage, Solomon was around 34 years old.

The will of Ruebin’s son, Charles Taylor, was written on 22 June 1844.  It lists as a sister, Joyce Draper of McNairy, TN.  At the time, Solomon’s widow was living near her son, John Harrison Draper, in McNairy, TN.

It makes sense that Solomon could have had a first marriage in Mecklenburg in the late 1770’s, but so far there is no evidence of a previous marriage or older children.  Some trees show Lucey as one of Solomon’s wives, based on a misinterpreted name in Solomon’s will, where he calls his wife, Joicey .  This informal name appears in census records as well.

Solomon and Joyce had the following children:
1. Elizabeth Draper was born 1794 in Person County, NC.
2. Martin Draper was born 4 March 1796 in Person County, NC, and died 4 January 1878.
3. Mary E. “Polly” Draper was born 16 February 1797 in Person County, NC, and died 16 November 1862.
4. John H. Draper was born 1803 in Person County, NC.

Solomon Jr., a planter, enlisted on 2 September 1780 at 24 as a private in the Mecklenburg County, Virginia, militia during the Revolutionary War, and served eight months.  At the time he was listed as 5’10", with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a fair complexion. 3
